Taonga Tuku Iho, national best guide for preterm birth care
Multiple calls from healthcare professionals for shared guidelines and resources for preterm birth was a key driver as the Carosika Collaborative was established and led to the first large, funded piece of mahi undertaken by members of the Collaborative. The Health Research Council/ Manatū Hauora funded Taonga Tuku Iho, Knowledge Translation for Equity in Preterm Birth Care and Outcomes in Aotearoa Project systematically identified high-quality clinical practice guidelines and research findings that have informed Taonga Tuku Iho, a national best practice guide for preterm birth care.
Taonga Tuku Iho provides recommendations and good practice across spontaneous and provider-initiated preterm birth and includes prediction, prevention and preparation for preterm birth. A number of resources including Whānau Information, Standard Operating Procedures, Aide Memoires and Audit Tools have been developed, as well as this website, to support implementation of Taonga Tuku Iho.

The Carosika Core Outcome Set and the Carosika Metrics
Through our Knowledge Translation for Equity in Preterm Birth Care and Outcomes in Aotearoa Project, we have led and co-ordinated research to identify the what are the most meaningful outcomes for whānau, healthcare professionals and researchers relevant to preterm birth in Aotearoa. These 15 outcomes have been included in the Carosika Core Outcome Set. Further research is ongoing to safely collect and use national data in ‘real-time’ on the Carosika Core Outcome Set and some key preterm birth process measures. This developing dataset or dashboard, known as the Carosika Metrics, will provide opportunity to measure the impact of Taonga Tuku Iho on preterm birth outcomes across Aotearoa and by groups such as ethnicity and geographical location. You can find out more about this work on our research page (under development).
